This book provides an overview of the traditional self-governance system of the Indigenous Chakma people within the semi-autonomous frontier region of the Chittagong Hill Tracts in southeastern Bangladesh.
It primarily focuses on the administrative roles and functions of the three-tier traditional institutions—the Circle Chief, Mauza Headman, and Village Karbari (Village Chief or Elder)—in matters relating to land administration, justice, and customary law within the Chakma heartland, known as the Chakma Circle.
In addition, it attempts to analyze the opportunities and challenges within the system, along with its relations with Chakmas living in adjoining territories in India.
