Karbi Indigenous Peoples: Guardians of Biodiversity
As AIPP continues to celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity, we are honored to share a powerful video message from Mr. Mukrang Bey of Assam, India. He speaks from the heart of Karbi Indigenous traditions—where nature is not only respected, but deeply revered.
“Every rock, tree, and stream is alive—with spirit, with power, with presence. They are bridges between the ancestors and the living. Bamboo and banana leaves are not just ritual tools—they are sacred mediums that connect the human world to the unseen realm,” says Mr. Mukrang Bey.
Indigenous knowledge holds the key to living in harmony with nature. This #BiodiversityDay, let us recognize the wisdom of Indigenous Peoples—and walk the path of reverence, respect, and responsibility.
His full message:
We, Karbi from the Northeastern part of India are the preserver and protector of biodiversity. We believe the almighty lives within the land, the forest, the river, and the wind.
Every rock, tree, and stream are alive—with spirit, with power, with presence. It works as the bridge between ancestors and the living.
Bamboo and banana leaves are not just ritual tools— they are sacred mediums that connect the human world to the realm of the unseen.
Biodiversity is imbibed in Karbi culture, traditions, stories and histories. That’s the reason we worship and value.
Let us all pledge today to protect and preserve Biodiversity.
Biodiversity is a lifeline for every individual.
And I belief Indigenous Peoples are the real guardians of biodiversity.
So, we should all Protect and Preserve them.
Happy World Biodiversity Day.
