Indigenous Peoples’ Voices on Biodiversity: Ms. Nimi Sherpa – Nepal

Ms. Nimi Sherpa belongs to the Sherpa Indigenous Community from the Mountain region of Nepal. She serves as the Chair of the National Indigenous Women’s Federation (NIWF), which is a member organization of the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP).

Ms. Sherpa explains, “As Indigenous Women, we hold the knowledge of our land, natural resources, and practices. We have been protecting and promoting our water, land, and forests.”

Ms. Sherpa highlights that despite the existence of numerous international agreements that recognize and ensure the rights of Indigenous Peoples, they continue to be affected by conflicting laws, climate change, and development activities.

Therefore, it is crucial for the Government to promptly implement the decisions of COP15 and recognize the contributions made by Indigenous Women in protecting the remaining biodiversity of the world.
