9th Session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
United Nations Headquarter, Geneva, Switzerland
11 – 15 July 2016

Presented by: Monica Kristiani Ndoen

Thank you Mr. Chairperson,

On behalf of Indigenous Peoples Asia Caucus, I would like to present statement on the Follow-up to Thematic Studies and Advice.

Chairperson,
Studies conducted by the EMRIP has covered needs to be shared with indigenous organizations at country level. Despite of that progress, participation of indigenous peoples needs to put out as main concern. We have to make sure improvement of indigenous peoples participation on EMRIP, as We, Indigenous Peoples are the one who always suffered from any violations on our rights.

As studies and advice are ways to provide a better understanding of the provisions of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and to propose concrete actions, We need to make sure recommendations made by studies and advice are along with the needs of indigenous peoples. Strategy on implementation has to be undertaken, so that recommendations do not stop on paper but into action.

Asia Indigenous Peoples Caucus also would like to recommend EMRIP, UNPFii, Special Rapporteur to initiate constructive dialog with Asian Government to seek way/s to ensure the recommendations of these UN Mechanisms on IPs can be implemented across Asia.

We also reiterate supports for conducting the activities to fulfill purposes of EMRIP has to be made, including financial support.

Thank you Mr. Chairperson
