Position: Project Coordinator under the environment programme

Duration of the Contract:   1 year with possibility of extension based on performance, (including 3- 9 months probation)
Reports to:  Programme Coordinator of Environment Programme
Duty Station:  AIPP Regional Secretariat in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Level of Education:   Bachelor Degree in Environment, Development Studies, Social Science and/or related fields

The Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) invites for the applications from qualified and competent candidates for the position of the “Project Coordinator” in the Environment programme.

Background:

The Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) is a regional organization founded in 1988 as a platform for solidarity and cooperation among indigenous peoples in Asia. AIPP actively promotes and defends indigenous peoples’ rights and human rights, sustainable development and management of resources, as well as environment protection.  For details visit www.aippnet.org

The AIPP secretariat is currently strengthening its staff management systems and leadership. Under the new management set-up, the secretariat will have three thematic pillars with five strategic programmes to raise awareness; build capacities for indigenous peoples empowerment and conduct sustained advocacy, networking and alliance building to achieve its mission.

AIPP has multiple projects being implemented in these thematic pillars and strategic programmes. The Coordinator to be hired will be responsible for coordinating the project on Building Resiliency of Indigenous Communities on Climate Change Adaptation under the Environment Programme supported by Misereor, which is being implemented in Nepal, Philippines, and Thailand.

  1. Major Duties and Responsibilities of the Project Coordinator:  

The project coordinator shall support to the overall implementation of the environment programme as outlined in the Operational Guidelines of the AIPP Organisational Manual to fulfill following objectives:

  • Indigenous peoples in selected countries in Asia are strengthened to articulate and assert their rights and indigenous knowledge relating to climate change, biodiversity, natural resource management and food sovereignty at local, national, regional and international levels.
  • Indigenous communities in selected areas in Asia, particularly in India, have secured community land titles and/or forest rights.
  • Indigenous peoples have sustained their engagements in the mechanisms, processes related to climate change, sustainable development, land tenure and bio-diversity at national, regional and international levels.
  1. Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the Project Coordinator:  

As a Project Coordinator, s/he shall be responsible for the following functions:

  • Take the charge in implementing the project based on the terms of project contract with the donors and agreements with the partner- organisations
  • Coordinate with the partners, consultants and other service providers engaged in the project activities
  • Closely work with the with the Programme Coordinator and other programme staff for the overall implementation of the programme’s plans and activities
  • Monitor and provide support as needed in the effective and efficient implementation of the projects activities by partners
  • Coordinate and prepare the timely submission of reports to donors including finance report
  • Take the lead in the networking/collaboration with other organisations/CSOs, etc in relation to the project implementation and thematic area of the project
  • Prepare and coordinate the advocacy and the communication activities of the project with the advocacy coordinator
  • Share information to the partners, networks, listserves
  • Prepare the annual work plan and budget for the project
  • Prepare six monthly and annual project reports
  • Assist in the preparation and timely submission of programme plans and reports
  • Participate in the Programme Team and regular Staff meeting
  • Inform and seek the guidance of the Programme Coordinator on pertinent issues in the relation to the project and the plans   and activities the programme
  • Support Programme Coordinator in fund raising for the programme
  • Any other duties assigned by the Programme Coordinator, Section Head, Secretary General and the Executive Council
  • Minimum work requirements:
  • The applicant must be an ‘Indigenous person’ from the Asia. But priority will be given to Indigenous female candidadates from South East Asia.

Knowledge and Qualification:

  • Bachelor degree on relevant environment, Development Studies, Social Science and/or related field.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of indigenous peoples rights, issues and concerns especially of indigenous peoples in Asia.

Experiences:

  • At least 3 years work experience in working on environment fields relating to indigenous peoples.
  • At least 2 years work experience on project management, monitoring and evaluation
  • At least 3 years work experiences with national and international indigenous peoples organizations, government agencies and civil society organizations

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong analytical skills and English writing skills- formulating key messages, writing brief statements and concise and results-oriented project reports
  • Knowledge and skills on logical framework and finance monitoring and budgeting
  • Excellent communication skills in written and verbal English. (7.5 score in English test)
  • Self-motivated, dynamic, creative and energetic
  • Positive attitude to working in a multi-ethnic/social environment
  • Flexible to do multi-tasking and to work under pressure
  • Willing to travel throughout Asia and beyond, when needed

  2. Salary* and benefits including 13thmonth pay
  3. Housing and personal communication allowance.

*Salary rate shall be based on the salary grade approved by the Executive Council of AIPP.
